Some Rigorous Contracts for Lay Fraternities

The terms of the contract for this famous polyptych, now reassembled at Sansepolcro, suggest that even if the mysterious Piero was appreciated in his home town, the pious fraternity which commissioned him was extremely tentative. In spite of the clause about completion, the work of painting seems to have continued at various times over the next fifteen years; and in spite of the clause demanding that it should be all his own work, his assistants are thought to have had a large part in the accompanying side panels of saints and the predella, though not of the famous central panel showing the Madonna with her cloak held open to protect the patrons kneeling below.
