Synergism between Histamine, Antihistamines, and Hypnotic Drugs†

Abstract

The synergism between antihistamines and the barbiturate Evipal was studied in mice. Similar synergism was found between histamine and barbiturates and between antihistamines and ether. The possible clinical usefulness of these findings is discussed. Thephorin, in mice, shows a synergistic effect with barbiturates or ether similar to that of Benadryl; yet according to clinical reports, Thephorin is rather a cerebral stimulant in humans. It is thus believed that this procedure is not suitable to assay sedative side effects of antihistamines experimentally.
