AbstractWe briefly surveyed metal‐rich and intermetallic compounds containing metal anions that have been characterized by density functional calculations. Transition metal anions come with electron configurations (n+1)s2nd10(n+1)p0, (n+1)s2nd10(n+1)p1, and (n+1)s2nd10(n+1)p2. Their nd orbitals act asreservoirs for holding ten electrons. Thus, these anions exhibit bonding characteristics similar to those found for their main group analogues.
