The following case came under my observation Aug. 17, 1901: A. B., aged 20, mechanic, while working on a piece of Bessemer steel—he holding a large chisel in both hands and stooping forward and a fellow workman striking with a sledge— was struck in the left eye by a piece of steel, which was thrown off by the cutting edge of the chisel, from the piece they were cutting. He was seen about half an hour later and presented the following conditions: There was a small wound in the upper lid of the left eye, slightly inward from the center and about one-fourth of an inch from the lid margin. On raising the lid a corresponding wound five millimeters long was seen at the sclero-corneal margin and a small wound in the iris near its base.
