Jaundice in Congenital Malrotation of the Intestine

Abstract

CONGENITAL malrotation of the intestine is a relatively common disease and one of the principal causes of intestinal obstruction in the newborn period. Although jaundice has been described in other causes for intestinal obstruction, 1-4 only one documented case of association between jaundice and malrotation has been described. 1 The present paper will describe 50 patients with malrotation admitted to the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago since 1955 and the relationship between this condition and jaundice in the neonate. Clinical Findings Age of Diagnosis. —As shown in Table 1, 38 of the 50 patients (76%) were admitted for surgery during the first 30 days of life. Of these, 19 patients (38%) had their conditions diagnosed in the first five days of life.
