The article is devoted to the analysis of the Ukrainians’ main expectations regarding integration into the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance, which have evolved and transformed under the pressure of historical events. The irrational belief in a better future, the search for hope in the expansion of personal and national opportunities, as well as overcoming flaws in the national governance system are characteristic motives behind the support of such a foreign policy course. Key events were presented thanks to the historical method. Such events marked a significant shift in the mood of Ukrainians in the national discourse on defining the direction of development (European, Eurasian), specifically: the Orange Revolution (2004), the Revolution of Dignity (2013–2014), and the full- scale Russian-Ukrainian war (since 2022 till now). The comparative and sociological methods showed that more than 80% of Ukrainians support Euro-Atlantic integration and key steps taken by the government in implementing this course. A unique situation of consolidation of the political elite and society’s attitudes to the fixation of the geopolitical vector grounding was identified, which occurred for the first time in the years of independence. It is proved that the moods and expectations of Ukrainians are directly opposed to the irrational geopolitical emotion of fear held by Europeans regarding the “Other”. Therefore, overcoming these differences, changing the post-Soviet behavioural model of citizens and adopting the core values and principles of life in the European Union should become transformative tasks for the government in preparing the Ukrainian political system for integration into the democracy club.

Стаття присвячена аналізу основних очікувань українців від інтеграції в Європейський Союз та Північноатлантичний альянс, які змінювались та трансформувались під тиском історичних подій. Ірраціональна віра у краще майбутнє, пошук надії у розширенні особистих та загальнодержавних можливостей й подолання вад власної управлінської системи є характерними мотивами підтримки такого зовнішньополітичного курсу. За допомогою історичного методу було артикульовано ключові події, які фіксували суттєву зміну настроїв українців у загальнодержавному дискурсі визначення напрямку розвитку (європейський, євразійський), а саме: Помаранчева революція 2004 р., Революція Гідності 2013– 2014 рр., повномасштабна російсько-українська війна 2022 р. Порівняльний та соціологічний методи зафіксували, що понад 80 % українців підтримують євроатлантичну інтеграцію та ключові кроки влади в реалізації відповідного курсу. Виявлено унікальну ситуацію консолідації настроїв політичної еліти та суспільства щодо фіксації геополітичного вектора інтеграції, що відбулось вперше за роки незалежності. Було доведено, що настрої та очікування українців прямо протилежні ірраціональній геополітичній емоції страху європейців щодо «Іншого», а тому подолання цих відмінностей, зміна пострадянської поведінкової моделі громадян, прийняття ключових цінностей та принципів життя в Європейському Союзі мають стати трансформаційними завданнями влади в підготовці української політичної системи до інтеграції до клубу демократій.
