Gender stereotypes of beauty in the phraseology of western podillia dialects

Gender stereotypes of beauty in the phraseology of western podillia dialects

Abstract

The relevance of phraseological units studying is due to the need for a thorough analysis of the phraseological system of the Ukrainian language in its regional display, ideographic characteristics and functional features in connection with the tendency of modern linguistics to a comprehensive study of the language phraseology. Recording and analysis of the Western Podillia area phraseological units will expand information about the national and cultural peculiarities of the region, reveal the specifics of the system, clarify speech processes, etc. Today, gender studies have the status of an independent field in linguistics and focus on a person endowed with specific intellectual, psycho-emotional, physiological and other characteristics; we observe the development of a new direction - phraseological gender studies based on the literary language and dialectal speech. The purpose of the article is to study gender stereotypes of human beauty in the phraseology of the Western Podillia dialects of the Ukrainian language. The material for the study is based on published phraseological dictionaries and the author's card index, compiled on the basis of records from expeditions in Western Podillia and adjacent areas, and lexicographical works from other areas of Ukraine have been used for comparison. Physical beauty and attractiveness in the phraseology of the Western Podillia dialects are represented by numerous phrases with feminine and masculine features, usually of the comparative type. It has been defined that phrases referring to appearance reflect the stereotype of the physical and spiritual ideal of a person that exists in the national consciousness of Ukrainians, so through fixed expressions speakers positively characterize maiden beauty, slender posture, youthful beauty, strength, health and strong spirit. It has been defined that the gender definitions of phraseological units are directly related to the lexical composition, and there are certain semantic relations between the components supported by the linguistic tradition. In Western Podillia, there are phraseological units with almost identical lexical composition, but with a distinction between masculinity and femininity according to the lexical figurative determinant; phraseological units that can equally characterize both a boy and a girl. Through reinterpretation, comparison, and imagery, the phraseological units of the area retain or enhance their expression.
