PSYCHOLOGICAL RECOVERY AND REHABILITATION OF MILITARY PERSONNEL IN THE CONTEXT OF ARMED CONFLICT

PSYCHOLOGICAL RECOVERY AND REHABILITATION OF MILITARY PERSONNEL IN THE CONTEXT OF ARMED CONFLICT

Abstract

Introduction. The psychological recovery and rehabilitation of military personnel engaged in armed conflicts remain a vital concern in the landscape of modern warfare. The extreme stress endured during combat frequently results in serious mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. These challenges impact not only the immediate mental and emotional well-being of service members but also carry lasting consequences for their social reintegration and overall quality of life. The growing prevalence of mental health issues among veterans, especially in war-affected nations, highlights the urgent need for comprehensive rehabilitation programs that integrate both psychological support and social reintegration strategies. Purpose. This article examines the primary methods for psychological recovery and rehabilitation of military personnel impacted by armed conflict. It focuses on evaluating current rehabilitation practices while identifying strategies to improve the effectiveness of recovery initiatives. Furthermore, it emphasizes the critical role of long-term psychological support and social reintegration in ensuring a comprehensive rehabilitation process for veterans. Methods. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of existing literature, reports, and case studies focused on the psychological rehabilitation of military personnel. It examines both conventional and modern treatment approaches, such as psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and the integration of social support systems. Additional data is collected from military rehabilitation centers and veterans’ organizations to evaluate the effectiveness of various programs. To further enhance understanding, qualitative methods are utilized, including interviews with mental health professionals and veterans, providing valuable insights into the personal experiences of individuals undergoing rehabilitation. Originality. This research stands out for its comprehensive approach to the psychological rehabilitation of military personnel, integrating mental health treatments with social reintegration strategies. It provides actionable recommendations to enhance the rehabilitation process by tackling the specific challenges veterans encounter when transitioning from combat to civilian life. Additionally, it plays a key role in advancing long-term support frameworks aimed at preventing relapses and fostering lasting mental well-being. The findings hold significant value for military rehabilitation centers, mental health professionals, and policymakers involved in shaping effective support systems for veterans. Conclusion. This study highlights the necessity of extending psychological recovery and rehabilitation for military personnel beyond short-term therapy. Long-term mental health support, active family participation, and structured social reintegration programs are essential components. Veterans often need continued care to manage delayed psychological effects such as PTSD, which may surface months or even years after their combat experiences. Future research should prioritize creating tailored rehabilitation strategies that address the unique needs of each veteran. Additionally, community and government support are indispensable, as they significantly contribute to successful reintegration and the sustained mental health of veterans.
