THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL NETWORKS ON THE FORMATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY OF HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS

Abstract

The article considers the impact of social networks on the formation of national identity of higher education students. The article analyses legal and regulatory documents and scientific literature on this issue. It is determined that national identity is the basis for patriotism, active citizenship and unity of the nation. The concept of “national identity” and the main factors of its formation in higher education students are characterised: by educational programmes, extracurricular activities, public organisations and social networks. It is found that the formation of the national identity of higher education students is a complex process that occurs under the influence of various factors. Experience shows that social networks are the most effective factor in the digital society. The article defines social networks as digital platforms, services and applications that are built around the convergence of content sharing, public communication and interpersonal relationships. The popularity of social networks among applicants is determined: by Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, X (Twitter), Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, Viber, Twitch, Reddit. Their characteristics are given. It is proven that social networks are an effective means of shaping the worldview, values, socialisation and identity of students. The positive (communication, overcoming geographical barriers, emotional connections, strengthening cultural heritage, mobilisation and coordination of youth, etc.) and negative (dissemination of inaccurate information, fragmented perception of reality, the influence of foreign information space, large amount of information, etc.) aspects of the impact of social networks on the formation of students’ identity are highlighted. The author proposes key areas of effective use of social media for the formation of national identity: creation of high-quality national content, formation of online communities, involvement of young people in national initiatives, integration of social media into the educational process, development of media literacy, and promotion of the Ukrainian language and culture.

У статті розглянуто вплив соціальних мереж на формування національної ідентичності здобувачів вищої освіти. Проаналізовано нормативно-правові документи та наукову літературу з цієї проблематики. Визначено, що національна ідентичність є основою для патріотизму, активної громадянської позиції та єдності нації. Охарактеризовано поняття “національна ідентичність” та основні чинники її формування у здобувачів вищої освіти: освітні програми, позаавдиторні заходи, громадські організації і соціальні мережі. Доведено, що соціальні мережі є ефективним засобом формування світогляду, цінностей, соціалізації та ідентичності здобувачів вищої освіти. Висвітлено позитивні та негативні аспекти впливу соціальних мереж на формування особистості. Запропоновано ключові напрями для формування національної ідентичності: створення якісного національного контенту, формування онлайн-спільнот, залучення молоді до національних ініціатив, інтеграція соціальних мереж в освітній процес, розвиток медіаграмотності, популяризація української мови і культури.
