 VSCPT is in fact a manifestation of the 'coherence population trapping' effect, discovered in Pisa, Italy in 1976 [G. Alzetta, A. Gozzini, L. Moi, G. Orriols, 1976, Nuovo Cimento B 36, 5]. This effect has found other interesting applications in the domain of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) that has driven novel phenomena like lasing without inversion or the realization of ultra-hight refractive index atomic media (see, e.g., S. E. Harris, Phys. Today, July 1997, p. 36).
