Abstract

The study attempts to identify the peculiarities of the formation and development of gallant discourse in the correspondence between Catherine II and Friedrich Melchior Grimm, one of the empress’s confidants. The concept of “gallant discourse” introduced into historical science by French historians A. Viala and D. Denis is applied to the historical and political context of the 17th–18th centuries, which allows us to use it when studying the correspondence between Catherine II and European philosophers. Being a special channel of influence, gallant discourse created the rules of narrative and a special rhetoric of communication. Catherine II, as an exponent of ideological attitudes and authorial strategies, was not only included in the gallant discourse, but also created it. The study of the correspondence of the Empress of the German Enlightenment allows us to determine the signs and features of the formation of the gallant discourse in the Russian Empire of the late 18th century and its significance in the political culture of the Enlightenment.
