Abstract

The cycle “The House under the Pear Tree” was written in 1927, when the poetess was in exile in Tashkent. The cycle of poems is written on behalf of the fictional Chinese philosopher Li Xiangzi. Its main themes are longing for home and friends, separation, but at the same time acceptance of one’s fate and contemplation of the garden around. The poet describes a small, simple cottage surrounded by different natural landscapes, and each character has its own unique symbolism. “The cottage under the pear tree” becomes an idealized symbol, very different from the author’s real life. In accordance with the central idea of the cycle, I analyze the multidimensional image of the butterfly in the context of Chinese literature and culture.
