Abstract

The article examines the process of forming the memory of the Solovetsky Stone, the monument to the victims of political repression. The author of the article relies on the methodology of cultural trauma and the concept of cultural memory and assumes that memory has a social framework. The empirical base of the research was formed in the period from 2018 to 2023. The aim of the article is to explore how representations of the traumatic Soviet past were constructed through the Solovetsky Stone. The monument was established on the initiative of the Arkhangelsk society “Sovest”, which was a structural unit of the “Memorial”*. This monument was important for the formation of collective identity in the early 1990s, but but currently has lost its significance. The monument has a symbolic code related to the work of grief, is a political statement and a metaphorical analogue of the Solovki special camp.
