Abstract
Antibodies represent an indispensable part of the human immune defense against various diseases. They are either generated by the immune system upon acute infection or activevaccination, or are applied as passive vaccine or targeted therapeutic. In the immune defense against malaria, antibodies either directly inhibit invasion of the parasite into its host cells, or recruit immune effector cells, e. g. monocytes or polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs). In malaria research, the stimulation of PMNs is determined in antibody-dependent respiratory burst (ADRB) assays, mostly using solid-phase immobilized antigens (sADRB) instead of merozoites (mADRB).
