Abstract
The essential tRNA-processing enzyme ribonucleaseP (RNaseP) is a striking example for evolution of an RNP enzyme. It is a ribonucleoprotein in bacteria, archea, and eukaryotic nuclei. No RNA component is found in mitochondria and chloroplasts of multicellular organisms to date, posing the question of enzyme evolution in these organelles of bacterial descent. The plastids (cyanelles) of some primitive algae, such as Cyanophora paradoxa and Glaucocystis nostochinearum, are intermediates in the evolution from cyanobacteria to chloroplasts and are an ideal model system to study the evolution of structure and function of RNaseP from organelles...
