Abstract
Mushroom bodies are dispensable for the developing and adult Drosophila fly. The developmental processes underlying mushroom body formation are well studied, the neural stem cells responsable for their development are identified and experimentally well accessable. Therefore Drosophila mushroom body development can be used as a powerful neurogenetic model system to find out about fundamental mechanisms underlying brain development by studying mutant flies showing aberrant mushroom body development.
