US university research contributions to industry: Findings and conjectures

Abstract
This paper reports the results of a study of US academic research contributions to industry. Data from a 1997 mail survey of biology, chemistry and physics faculty provides information on the nature and contributions of industry-relevant university-based research. A set of in-depth telephone interviews was conducted during the 1996–1998 time frame with both engineering and science faculty and their industrial counterparts that probed university research contributions to industry in more detail.
