3 The sustainable development concept is by no means new to European citizens. It has been in circulation since 1987's Our Common Future report by the UN Environment and Development Commission. In it, the goal of sustainable development is defined as 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations' ability to meet their needs.'
