Abstract
El trastorno depresivo mayor (TDM) se acompaña de altas tasas de morbilidad médica, baja productividad, disminución de la esperanza de vida, altas tasas de suicidio y ha sido considerado como la primera causa de discapacidad laboral en las Américas. Por ello, la atención al paciente deprimido implica, entre otras cosas, el diagnóstico oportuno y el tratamiento adecuado del padecimiento. Aunque un número creciente de agentes antidepresivos está disponible para tratar la depresión, aproximadamente la mitad de los pacientes no responden y hasta dos tercios no logran la remisión después del tratamiento de primera línea.
