Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614) acquired in her lifetime a great international reputation. She produced a large Œuvre of more than 100 paintings which included private devotional works, large scale altarpieces for churches, portraits of the Bolognese and Roman nobility and mythological subjects. It came into being from c. 1570 until her death in 1614. Her artistic career was influenced by several motives. Lavinia came of age as an artist at the time of political and religious changes.
