Abstract

International audience; La contribution met en évidence la mémoire et la postérité du règne de Murat dans la société du royaume des Deux-Siciles de la restauration des Bourbons en 1815 à la veille de l’Unité italienne. Il est immédiatement érigé en objet de mémoire dans une très large production écrite à prétention historique, en grande partie inédite, attachée à décrire le traumatisme de la campagne manquée d’Italie de 1814-15. Ces discours négatifs interrogent sa légitimité à gouverner le royaume de Naples et dénoncent le retard avec lequel il a accordé une constitution à ses sujets. L’opposition politique aux Bourbons se construit néanmoins à partir des cadres laissés par dix ans d’occupation française (milieux militaires et administratifs ; sociétés secrètes). La figure de Murat n’est réhabilitée que plus tard et de manière échelonnée, du fait de ses victoires militaires qui auraient servi la nazione napoletana. Cette inclusion paradoxale au « système patriotique » (R. De Lorenzo) napolitain contribue à expliquer l’absence d’une réelle mobilisation dans le royaume autour des projets politiques du fils de Joachim, Lucien Murat, prétendant à la couronne de Naples dans le contexte de la « question italienne » des années 1850, seulement soutenu par une fraction très réduite des libéraux méridionaux en exil à Turin.
