Abstract

Lempung memiliki kelimpahan yang besar di Indonesia dan penggunaannya yang belum maksimal menjadi daya tarik untuk dikaji. Lempung Bukittinggi yang telah dimodifikasi menjadi support pada katalis heterogen melalui proses pertukaran kation menggunakan nikel nitrat heksahidrat dan nikel sulfat heksahidrat telah diuji aktivitas katalitiknya pada reaksi transesterifikasi Crude Palm Oil (CPO) untuk menghasilkan metil ester. Senyawa yang mengandung nikel diketahui sebagai katalis yang baik dalam konversi biomassa, maka pertukaran kation dengan nikel bertujuan untuk meningkatkan aktivitas katalitik lempung. Rasio mol Si/Al lempung induk yang telah dikarakterisasi dengan XRF memiliki nilai sebesar 2,0. Komposisi mineral lempung yang dianalisis dengan XRD terdiri dari illit dan kaolinit, sedangkan mineral lainnya adalah albit. Analisis dengan FTIR menunjukkan terjadinya pengurangan intensitas serapan oleh vibrasi OH karena menguapnya air kristal. Proses kalsinasi tidak merubah pola XRD dan rasio mol Si/Al lempung secara signifikan. Komposisi nikel yang masuk ke dalam lempung lebih banyak saat reaksi dilakukan pada suhu 70 oC dibandingkan suhu ruang (29 oC). Ion Ni2+ dari nikel sulfat lebih mudah menggantikan kation lain dibandingkan nikel nitrat. Sampel dengan kandungan nikel terbanyak yaitu lempung yang dimodifikasi dengan nikel sulfat pada suhu 70 oC (4,414 %). Hal ini memberikan efek nyata pada uji aktivitas katalitiknya dengan kondisi yang sama untuk semua katalis. Pertukaran kation meningkatkan aktivitas katalitik lempung sebesar 60 %, sedangkan kalsinasi meningkatkan aktivitasnya sebesar 75 % pada transesterifikasi. Kata kunci : Lempung, katalis heterogen, pertukaran kation, CPO, transesterifikasi.
