Abstract

The article probes into the reasons behind the different spelling of the originally the same family name: Maryański – Maryjański – Marjański – Mariański. These variations repeatedly surface in XIX–XX centuries’ documents compiled in both Polish and Russian, the latter issued on Polish lands when these made a part of the Russian Empire. Excluding all possible extralinguistic factors or changes in the proper-name rendering practices, the article concludes that the variance in the family-name spelling stems from the requirement to follow the rules adopted by Polish orthography reforms.
