Superior cold recycling : The score project

In order to develop Environmentally Friendly Construction Technologies (EFCT) and as part of the 5th Framework Program of Research and Development, the European Community has decided to finance a research project on cold recycling, entitled SCORE "Superior COld REcycling based on benefits of bituminous microemulsions and foamed bitumen. A EFCT system for the rehabilitation and the maintenance of roads". This research project gathers organizations from all over Europe, from industrial partners to governmental research centers and universities : Probisa (Spain), Nynas (UK), Eurovia (France), SSZ (Czech Republic), Produktion (Sweden), LCPC (France), Cedex (Spain), and Université Joseph Fourier (France). It started in june 2002 for a period of 3 years, and represent an effort of 281 man months, and a total budget around 3 M. The main objectives of the project are threefold : 1- to better understand cold recycling, from the milling process to the mix design and the final mechanical properties, in order to propose guidelines for an optimal use of the technology, 2- to explore the possibility of improved binders from the detailed analysis of the interactions between aged and new rejuvenating binder, and 3- to develop improved technologies based on the use of foamed bitumen and micronised emulsions, or a combination of both.
