Abstract

The foundation of Jesuit mission in New France raised the question of its status in the apostolate system of the Catholic church. Since the mission was founded, there had been a lot of contradictions round its status due to collision of both ecclesiastical and temporal forces participating in colonizing Canada. In many respects, creating Diocese in Quebec settled these problems for Jesuit missionaries. It complicated and extended the period of registering the status, which reflected the French church self-determination in the 17th century. The process was connected with devel-opment of Gallicanism and Jansenism, the Jesuits’ search for proper status in establishing new principles of mutual relations of the Holy See with the Bourbons, the king and the higher clergy of France.
