Abstract

A model of crack generation at stress concentrators in quasi-brittle materials is put forward. Using data of two laboratory experiments for the critical stress intensity coefficient K Ic and classical s-e-diagram of the material, quasi-brittle fracture diagrams are constructed for a crack-like U-notch with known tip radius for a wide range of crack-like defect length variation. With the tip radius increase, the critical stresses for notches much exceed the critical stresses for cracks. The diagrams constructed on the external load crack-like defect length plane divide this plane by a pair of curves into three regions that correspond to the absence of fracture, damage accumulation in the prefracture zone material under repeated loading, and specimen division into parts under single loading.
