Abstract

The paper describes the key elements of conservative type of religious identity in modern Orthodox community. Discourse analysis is the main methodological framework of the study. Discourse identity is a subject position, which is formed through internalization of discursive meanings by various communication genres. Two types of meanings constitute religious identity: (1) meanings, which come from the interpretation of religious doctrine; (2) ideological meanings, which represent goals of religious community in current socio-political context. Faith-based mass media broadcast and partly form chains of meanings, which various competing groups elaborate within certain religious community. Therefore, to describe conservative Orthodox identity, we turned to the analysis of the conservative Orthodox mass media as a mirror of discourse. The analysis of mass media materials reveals two vectors of conservative Orthodox identity. The first vector constitutes a "role model" for Orthodox believers. The second one characterizes the way a group of conservative Orthodox community adapts to the realities of the secular society.
