Abstract

The growth of the role of monetary assets in the British linguoculture is revealed in perception of ideal and material objects of value in terms of cost. All objects mentioned can be grouped into the following categories: «efforts», «suffering», «life», «emotions», «time», «privileges», «thought», «words». The specifi c character of works by a particular author can be analyzed via the prevalence of the contexts belonging to an above-mentioned category. During the period from the XIV to the XIX centuries the most frequent use of the concept «cost» is found in the Age of Enlightenment which can be described as the growth of the role of the rational mind in cognition. A new interpretation of objects in terms of cost comes to life as an author's metaphor which becomes included in the linguoculture after being used by other authors.
