Abstract

This paper reports the results of a comparative analysis of gender models of personal identity, gender attitudes towards one’s own and the opposite sex, and gender stereotypes of family interactions of university students. All areas of investigation show dominance of androgynous trends. Gender self-identification is found to be problematic for all participants, but especially so for young males. All subjects regardless of their gender and personality type favour a combination of egalitarian and traditional/patriarchal types of family interactions. Future teachers of both sexes treat each other positively and with interest, with the males also believing in the possibility of socially useful cooperation with females. Future psychologists maintain a physical and psychological distance from males. All subjects perceive the opposite sex as ‘abstruse’ and ‘low-priority’. The ‘masculine type’ subjects of both sexes show the highest rigidity of responses.
