Abstract

The article offers a focus on certain issues lying within the structural as well as functional-pragmatic and cognitive features of the texts that belong to the realm of the mass-media (mediatexts). There is a specific emphasis placed on peculiar use of the language units employed to express the author’s intention, both explicitly and implicitly. The semantic dominants in the core of the message can be achieved lexically and phraseologically through language units possessing evaluation and descriptive potential, which is done in order to intensify the perception on the part of the recipient. Besides, the authors point at potential mismatch between the semantic and associative spheres in the recipient’s mind and that of the author, which, in turn, may bring challenges in its wake due to issues in proper decoding of culture-bound information in mediatexts. The authors employed the interactive English dictionary VISUAL THESAURUS to reveal the core and peripheral areas of the concept EQUALITY, while the analysis itself was performed to uncover specific points about constructing value-and-meaning space in information-analytical texts.
