Abstract

The end of the 1940s was a time of tightening of state control in all spheres of public life. Representatives of the intellectual elite, including scientists and historians were under special supervision. Any scientist or cultural worker could be a “victim” of the state machine, regardless of his status and professional achievements. Course of the ideological campaign and its role in the scientists' life is considered by the example of life story of Solomon Yakovlevich Lurie (1891-1964) who was a major specialist in the sphere of antiquity, a professor at Leningrad State University, for whom this campaign was a turning point, radically changed his position and status in the scientific community.
