The article is devoted to the analysis of sectional hypothesis in the conceptual heritage of Frederick Jackson Turner, the famous American historian of the Gilded Age. Basing on the concepts of frontier and section, Turner builds a twofold historical theory of American development. According to the ideas of environmentalism the historian admits a dominating influence of environment and its role in the forming of the sections. As the frontier advanced further westward, the early settlements were transformed in the sections or physiographic regions with its own national (in the beginning), economic, social and cultural peculiarities.

В статье анализируется теория «секций» американского историка и педагога конца XIX-начала XX вв. Ф. Дж. Тёрнера. Исходя из понятий «граница» и «секция», Тёрнер выстраивает двуединую историческую концепцию развития США. В соответствии с понятием инвайронментализма учёный признаёт преобладающее влияние окружающей среды и её взаимосвязь с образованием секций. По мере продвижения «границы» на запад освоенные территории трансформировались в регионы-секции, отличающиеся друг от друга в национальном, экономическом, социальном и культурном отношениях.
