Abstract

The research surveys dynamic changes of meaning and functionwhich occur to a literary image of water in its evolution from myth to literary fairy-tales of the 19th century. The article aims to point out the transformations of this image caused by the genre’s features, the main idea of the text and the author’s personality. Celtic myth interprets the image of water in two ways: as personification of the chaos and the source of life. Fairy-tales reduce some of this image’s functions and qualities: the plots are mainly overland; the characters go under water instead of across the ocean. Nevertheless, water creatures preserve their original ability to endow the characters. In literary works traditional and innovative features of water image make a unique whole. In “The Light Princess” by G.MacDonald traditional meanings of the water can be seen in such episodes as the heroine’s christening, the search of a “magic wife”, the old witch’s sorcery under the lake, endowing and healing the characters. The author’s innovations are the following: rationalized effect of the bewitched water, realistic presentation of the lake, contamination of different functions into one image, the use of the symbols from Greek mythology, deep psychological depiction of the lake, making the lake a central image of the tale. Such transformations ensure the uniqueness and permanent development of the genre.
