Abstract

The place, role and importance for science of the fundamental work of the American researcher J. P. Marsh are considered: Marsh G. P. Man and Nature, or Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action. New York: Charles Scribner, 1864. The opinions of the scientists who highly appreciated this book about human impact on the nature are given. The relevance of the content of this significant pioneer work for the effective solution to the problems of the present that demand immediate attention and are going to happen is emphasized. The special attention is paid to the guiding ideas that for the first time were stated on pages of the published edition by J. P. Marsh whose priority in formulating the problem statements is essential to note. J. P. Marsh’s scientific work is analysed in three aspects. Firstly, the ideas were revealed which despite the fact that their authorship belongs to the American researcher were later attributed to other scientists. Secondly, the basic ideas of J. P. Marsh’s conception on legitimacy and consequences of human changes of the environment are covered. Thirdly, the scientist’s contribution to the development of science is estimated on the basis of revealing of those his ideas which then gained development in geography and geoecology.

П. Marsh G. P. Man and Nature, or Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action. New York: Charles Scribner, 1864.
