Abstract

Problem of hospitalism in psychiatry is becoming increasingly important in terms of health system reform and refocusing to ambulatory medical care. Hospitalism syndrome leads to increasing dependence of the patients from the hospital environment, to decrease of psychical functions and to significant personality changes in general. There is considered hospitalism syndrome in older people with mental disorders in the context of the effects of deprivation and adaptation to old age. There are offered social and psychological factors playing an important role in the formation and development of hospitalism such as personality traits, social surrounding, characteristics of motivating needs, relation to illness and treatment.
