The article studies history of relations between I.S. Turgenev and K.N. Leontiev in the context of philosophical and aesthetic ideas in Russian literature of XIX century. Based on the analysis of socio-political positions of writers and their philosophical and aesthetic views the following conclusion is drawn: Turgenev's work is a striking example of the Russian realist tradition in literature of the XIX century, while creativity K.N. Leontiev typologically belongs to the modernist movement arisen in the Russian literature at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. That the writers belonging to different stages in the development of Russian literature is the main cause of misunderstanding arose between them, leading to a final rupture in 1861.
