Abstract

Moving to a different country, long-term or for good, is one of the most crucial changes in an adult person's life, since it requires adaptation to a new environment and is connected with perception and acquisition of a new ethnic culture in close contact with a new ethnic group. In most cases cross-cultural adaptation is accompanied by 'culture shock', i. e. strong stress experienced by an individual interacting with a different culture. The article describes the author's empirical study aimed at the research into the intensity and dynamics of acculturative stress with sojourners from English speaking countries living in Russia. The correlation of stress intensity and individual factors is analyzed, and emotional characteristics influencing the acculturative stress dynamics are described.
