Abstract

The article analyzes the basic research approaches to the study of Russia’s demographic history in the XX century. The demographic transition theory is examined as a leading methodological instrument of the modern historical-demographic researches of demographic modernization in the country. It is demonstrated that A. G. Vishnevsky had made the significant contribution to the adaptation of this paradigm for study of the demographic development of Russia. Basic element of his conception is a thesis about objective and universal character of the demographic transition The criticism of the transition theory is analyzed; it is based on theses about the great regional demographic differentiation and significant influence of natural and social factors on demographic dynamics.
