Abstract

Abortions account for a great part of the reproductive losses in the Rostov Province. Assessment of the development of the reproductive/demographic situation concerning all abortions requires that we distinguish between two essentially disparate groups. The first group comprises elective abortions initiated by the woman's choice, while the second group is composed of spontaneous and compulsory abortions (mandated by the medical indications). Such abortions show the consistency of the female reproductive function and the level of pre-natal losses. During the last decade, the number of therapeutic abortions in the Rostov Province has been decreasing, but the number of spontaneous abortions has remained at a practically constant level, which calls for close scrutiny of this problem.
