Abstract

The author of the article discusses the role of free towns in the formation of modern society. The article highlights several aspects of the transition of the medieval town to a modern one: the issue of an ideal medieval town and that of a transitional period, changes in economic conditions, issues of the influence of the absolutism and interrelations between towns and states in the XVI–XVIII centuries. Similar subjects are important for the research of the Russian history.
