Abstract

The article is devoted to revealing the means of realizing the ideological Cold war strategy in the contemporary Western political discourse. The study is based on the analysis of official statements of Western political leaders describing and evaluating Russia’s recent political actions. The aim of the research consists in exposing the meanings of political definitions implicating the essence, tension degree, and prospects of the actual ideological confrontation strategy. The discourse of political tension that has acquired its specific shape since 2014, contains marked properties of the communicative confrontational strategy meeting the characteristic criteria of the Cold war ideology. Such properties are revealed via political code markers functioning as a combination of the conceptual content of repeatedly emphasized lexical units with the subtextual information based on the knowledge of political context. A special type of the political code is exemplified by the deliberate logical contradiction between the explicit refusal to acknowledge the Сold war recurrence and the pronounced negative colouring of the diplomatic statements. The implicative potential of the code is realised in the disguising medium of diplomatic rhetorical means which transform the formal contradiction into a delicate sign for the political adversary.
