Abstract

The article discusses utterances with ni in modern French. The analysis of examples testifies that this coordinative conjunction must be considered as a negative equivalent of the relators et and ou rendering respectively additional proper, alternative proper and alternative-temporal relations between coordinate components. The aptitude of ni to combine with other coordinative conjunctions (et ni, mais ni, ou ni) can be explained by the functioning of the mentioned conjunctions on different syntactic levels: ni connects the grammatically homogeneous elements of a simple sentence, while et, mais, ou unite the parts of a compound sentence or of a supra-sentential construction.
