Animals are very variable in body size. Differences in body size are visible not only at the interspecific level but also within species, whether they are differences in size during ontogeny or among individuals of the same species exposed to different environmental conditions. The size of the organism depends on the size and number of the basic units from which it is built, i.e. the cells.
