Abstract

The article provides a brief overview of the works on the religions of India by the undeservedly forgotten Russian thinker of the late 19th - early 20th centuries Vladimir Alexandrovich Kozhevnikov. The context of writing the main work of the researcher "Buddhism in comparison with Christianity" is shown. Some reasons for the scientist's interest in Buddhism are indicated – polemics with theosophists and the leading number of adherents of Buddhism in the world at the beginning of the 20th century. Also considered the work of V. A. Kozhevnikov, devoted to a critical analysis of pre-Buddhist asceticism in India, in which, on the one hand, various forms of asceticism in Brahmanism, Jainism and Buddhism are compared, on the other hand, an assessment of Indian asceticism is given from Christian positions
