Abstract

The ritual of self-flagellation is found in many religions and cultures. This paper discusses the ritual of self-flagellation, which has become an integral part of the religious Shiite culture. The above practice is analyzed on the example of the ritual of Ashura (Arbain). As part of the study, an attempt was made to identify the essence of the Ashura, the history of its occurrence, the place of self-torture in it, the attitude of Sunnis to the Shiite ritual of self-torture, the legitimacy of performing the ritual of self-flagellation from the point of view of the Shiite clergy
