At least 300 scramjet engine firing tests have been conducted at the ramjet engine test facility (RJTF) of the Kakuda Space Center of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA-KSC). However, because problems arose with on safety and the testing procedures, remedial measures were needed prior to the testing of the liquid hydrogen (LH2) cooled scramjet engine. Therefore, only 13 tests of the LH2-cooled scramjet engine have so far been conducted. Of particular concern is the safe handling of the large amount of gaseous hydrogen produced by the evaporation of LH2 in these tests. Reviewing the testing procedure, improving the poorly performing part of the LH2 supply apparatus, and redesigning the evaporated gas processor cleared up these problems, and safe testing of the LH2-cooled scramjet engine became possible. In this report, improvements of the LH2 supply system, handling of the LH2 supply system and the incidental equipments, and testing procedure of the LH2-cooled scramjet engine were described.
