This study aims to reveal the social factors and founder's motivations that lead to the establishment of the Yaeyama kindergarten by analyzing the institution's prospectus and regulation. The Yaeyama kindergarten was established in Ishigaki Island, southwestern part of Okinawa prefecture, a region with no demand for early childhood education at the beginning of the Showa era. Moreover, this kindergarten was established before the Battle of Okinawa (1945), which entirely destroyed Okinawa, and still exists today; maintaining such large amounts of historical documents and records is, hence, remarkable.
