The article investigates the affairs of the famous Byzantine statesman John Kantakouzenos with the Anatolian Turks in the first period of his political career (1320-s). The study based on the all main narrative sources, including the little-known letters of Theodore Hyrtakenos. In spite of scanty information, the research shew that John Kantakouzenos participated personally in several significant battles against the Turks. However, he didn’t still have any special knowledge of the customs and language of this nation. Kantakouzenos perceived the Turks at that time as enemies of the empire, rather than potential allies.
