Abstract

This paper offers new interpretations of the subject and reconsiders function of The Battle of the Gladiators by Paris Bordon from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Bordon's painting is examined in a broader context, which lets us find analogies in French and Dutch art, in a circle of pictorial and graphic presentation of the subject of Massacre of the Triumvirate (works by Antoine Caron, Nicolo del Abbate, Hans Vredeman de Vries and others of the same name). This works are traditionally considered to be an allegorical depictions of the religious wars of the 16th century. Bordone's painting is similar to the indicated range of works not only by the common pictorial motif of the battle and the subject, but also by the artistic language of fantastic architecture, which for all artists goes back to the same visual sources - the engravings of Antonio Lafreri Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae and the books of Sebastiano Serlio. Based on these similarities, Bordone's numerous connections with Augsburg and the circle of Charles V, the article suggests that Paris Bordone's The Battle of the Gladiators should be included in the circle of works associated with the imperial representation of Charles V in the image of Octavian Augustus. The depicted battle refers us to the events surrounding the Battle of Mühlberg and the victory of the Spanish crown over the Protestants.
