The paper considers the foundations of Immanuel Kant's ethical system, specifically the study, analysis and understanding of the categorical imperative in the context of personal freedom and autonomy of will. The author focuses on the contrast created by the moral law being, on the one hand, universal and binding, and on the other hand, possible to derive individually through an act of free will. Kant managed to bridge the seemingly contradictory notions of autonomy and universality through the third interpretation of the categorical imperative, which substantiates the idea of personal freedom
